The purpose of the Pathology in Practice feature is to provide readers with clinically relevant information relating to the practice of veterinary pathology, focusing on the evaluation and interpretation of gross pathologic lesions and histopathologic or cytologic findings. Readers are invited to submit interesting cases in which gross pathologic lesions were integral to the diagnosis of the disease or condition.
By use of the headings, the text for manuscripts submitted for this feature should begin with a brief History of the case, followed by Clinical and Gross Findings. Preferably, 2 photographs should be provided to illustrate the gross pathologic changes of interest. Readers will be invited to formulate a presumptive diagnosis or differential diagnoses from the information in the text and those figures, and then directed to turn the page for histopathologic or cytologic findings; one or 2 photomicrographs should be provided to illustrate the histopathologic or cytologic changes of interest. The remainder of the text should be organized in sections under the headings Histopathologic Findings (or Cytologic Findings), Morphologic Diagnosis, and Discussion.
The text should include patient signalment, a short description of the patient's history, relevant physical examination findings (and if helpful, laboratory findings), gross pathologic changes, histopathologic or cytologic findings; the diagnosis should be provided along with brief details of treatment and outcome, and perhaps discussion of the disease in general. The aforementioned 3 or 4 figures incorporating relevant gross and histologic (or cytologic) disease features are typically included, and additional figures will be incorporated on the basis of merit and available space. Important features should be indicated in the image, and photomicrographs must include a scale bar and identification of stains used, if any. The figure legends should identify relevant features and abnormalities. Because the feature is limited to 3 pages in the journal, the text should be no longer than approximately 1,400 words, depending on the number of figures and references.
Authors should follow all general guidelines for manuscript preparation and submission, including guidelines for preparation of electronic copies of figures, given in the Instructions for JAVMA Authors.
