Production Animal Disease and Food Safety Research
(COR Oversight; EB 6/97;COR reviewed 3/04, Revised 11/09)

The AVMA recommends increased federal funding for research to prevent production animal diseases and enhance food safety as mechanisms to control and contain endemic, emerging, and foreign animal disease threats. Examples of federally-funded programs that fulfill these goals include but are not limited to:

  • The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) of the National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
  • Research capacity funds (ie, Section 1433 of the Research Act of 1977).
  • The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank.
  • The National Research Support Project 7
