AVMA policy

US Pharmacopeia Representation
(Amended by the AVMA Executive Board June 2002; revised November 2007)

The AVMA encourages expansion of the US Pharmacopeia (USP) to expand the delegation representing veterinary medicine at the Pharmacopeial Convention to include one representative from each of the colleges/schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, along with current delegates from the AVMA, Animal Health Institute, American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine. Veterinarians, besides being responsible for the well-being of animals, are also intimately involved in the drug development process and in maintaining public health. The USP Convention would benefit from representation by a strong contingent from the veterinary educational establishments in the United States.

The AVMA strongly urges the USP to continue the work of the Veterinary Medical Information Expert Committee and the Veterinary Medical Standards Expert Committee. The AVMA also encourages the USP to incorporate veterinarians on additional appropriate committees.
