| Controlled Substances Used for Euthanasia |

The AVMA recommends that Drug Enforcement Administration controlled substances for euthanasia of animals be used only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian in order to:
- Ensure proper and humane euthanasia of animals
- Ensure proper disposal of euthanized animals to avoid secondary toxicoses
- Reduce the chance of drug abuse.
