| Veal Calf Welfare |
|
(Current as of June 2005)
|
| |
|
The AVMA recognizes that veal calf production is well established, can be humane, and can ensure the welfare of calves. Veterinarians and veal producers are encouraged to cooperate to provide management and housing systems that:
- Incorporate a health program developed and implemented in conjunction with a veterinarian.
- Provide for environments that prevent injury to calves and address proper ventilation, temperature, and humidity control.
- Permit calves to stretch, stand, and lie down comfortably.
- Ensure that calves receive a daily diet that is nutritionally adequate to maintain health.
- Include lighting such that all housed calves can be seen clearly.
