AVMA's message to Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Legal compounding begins with FDA-approved drugs. Nevertheless, veterinarians recognize occasional instances where unapproved bulk drugs are needed to relieve pain and suffering in non-food animals when approved drugs are otherwise unavailable or medically insufficient. FDA discretionary policy must recognize that reality.
