Animal Welfare Curriculum Planning Group

Ask anyone, and they'll tell you that veterinarians play an integral role in animal health. Unfortunately, the veterinarian's role in protecting animal welfare isn't as prominent. Veterinarians have the potential and the responsibility to be leaders in the field of animal welfare…but to assume this role, veterinarians must be provided with the tools they need to actively and effectively participate in the wider scientific and social discussion about how animals are appropriately used and cared for.
Education is one of these critical tools and, while animal welfare is not completely absent from veterinary curricula, many stakeholders have expressed concern that instruction in animal welfare science and ethics in colleges of veterinary medicine is currently insufficient, unsystematic and disconnected in delivery.
To address the need for a comprehensive educational program, the AVMA is spearheading an effort to design a plan for the development of a model animal welfare curriculum for veterinary schools/colleges
Nominations for the AVMA Planning Group will be accepted through August 1, 2010.

AVMA/AAVMC Joint International Educational Symposium on Animal Welfare
(November 8-11, 2009)
Provides an overview of the outcomes of the Symposium as well as links to proceedings, publications and other relevant information.
