Growing up in Alabama, my family cared for a variety of pets and wild animals. My older brother became a veterinarian and I started helping out at his clinic. By that time, I knew I was going to Auburn, so I decided to pursue veterinary medicine and graduate from the same school as my brother.
I am proud to be an AVMA member. It's very important to have one voice representing your profession's interests, and the AVMA does a good job. One of the best services the AVMA provides is the Veterinary Career Center. It provides a clearing house of veterinary jobs so qualified people can be matched up with the appropriate opportunities.
We typically have minimal turnover of veterinarians and staff, but, within a month, we had a transfer and a resignation. Losing two veterinarians in a short amount of time blind-sided our group practice. I put a posting on VCC and pretty quickly had a good list of candidates. We were able to fill the positions promptly. The people we chose are qualified, productive and good long term contributors to our practice. Thanks to the Veterinary Career Center, we were able to return to a full staff very quickly.
