I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian in Junior High School. Throughout high school, I volunteered at a local, mixed-animal practice. Growing up on a farm around pigs and livestock was instrumental in my decision to focus on food animals, as was our veterinarian. He was someone I really respected. My number one love was agriculture; it still is.
But trying to find the money to get through vet school wasn't easy. I came from a pig farm that wasn't making any money in the 90's. And like students today, I had to scramble to find the resources but I don't regret for one moment, taking this path. It's just something that I always wanted to do. Today, helping my clients succeed by being a part of their production team is something I am really proud of. Just like I'm proud to be a member of the AVMA.
The reason I take such pride is that the AVMA represents all veterinarians and plays an important role in helping with major issues facing our profession - not only the swine issues that I face, but all of the issues that all of us face. From student loan repayment options to drug availability to small business issues, I need their support and help, just like they need mine. That relationship is important to me and the reason why I'm proud to be an AVMA member.
