Starting a new practice in a rural area "to-do" list:

• Contact the state veterinary medical association.
  • Apply for a license in the state if you do not have one yet.
  • Locate any other veterinarians in your region.
• Work on developing a client base.
  • American Farm Bureau.
  • Livestock Marketing Association.
  • Ask for a list of farms in your area that you can contact (e.g., www.selectfarmlist.com, www.lmaweb.com/Member-Area/member-search.php).
• Visit local and state government sites.
• Learn more about what's required to start a business (and a practice).
  • AVMA's Veterinary Practice Resource Center.
  • Health and liability insurance.
  • IRS site with small business checklist.
