| Summer Internship/Externship Research Opportunities for Veterinary Medical Students at NIH |
| |
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), in collaboration with the Intramural Research Divisions of The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is interested in providing select pre-doctoral veterinary medical students the opportunity to participate in the NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP). These awards, designated for veterinary students, are part of the NIH campus-wide SIP. Through our NCI-coordinated program, veterinary medical students will receive hands-on experience and develop skills in scientific research; work with leading biomedical scientists using cutting-edge technologies at NCI, NIAID, NIDDK, NHLBI, and NINDS; interact with veterinarians training in translational and interdisciplinary research in the NCI Comparative Pathology Training Program; learn about comparative molecular pathology and comparative oncology initiatives in human biomedical research; attend formal lectures and seminars targeted to students; discover professional roles performed by veterinarians working in a research environment; and share experiences with veterinary students from other colleges across the nation. Internships generally begin in late May and end in mid August. It may be possible to arrange externships for other times during the year, preferably for a minimum of 6 weeks. Participants in this program must currently be in good academic standing in an accredited veterinary medical college. Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents. Summer students receive an NIH stipend. The summer program application process opens in mid November 2009, and applications should be submitted by Feb 1, 2010 for full consideration. Applicants for the Summer Internship Program at NIH should follow the links at http://www.training.nih.gov/student/sip/ and e-mail intent to apply to ncimolpathol@mail.nih.gov. Externship applicants should apply directly to ncimolpathol@mail.nih.gov. For information, visit the CCR website at http://ccr.nci.nih.gov/resources/training/default.asp or e-mail R. Mark Simpson, DVM, PhD at ncimolpathol@mail.nih.gov.
DHHS, NIH, NCI, NIAID, NIDDK, NHLBI and NINDS are EOE's.
