Veterinarian
 
The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is looking for a qualified veterinarian to complete a 1-year internship that focuses on training in all aspects of the medical and surgical care of zoo animals, including diagnosis, treatment, preventative medicine, parasitology, nutrition, anesthesiology, pathology, record keeping, and staff communication regarding zoological cases. The intern will be required to develop and carry out a research project for presentation at a scientific meeting with the goal of publication. The intern will spend blocks of time at the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB), the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Tri-State Bird Rescue, as well as involvement in cases and rounds at Johns Hopkins Department of Comparative Pathology, depending on the interests of the individual. Monthly case rounds are conducted with the veterinary staff from the NAIB. This is a full-time, exempt position that includes benefits. The internship will start July 1, 2010. Application deadline is April 1, 2010. Applicants must submit a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, official professional and graduate transcripts with class rank, and 3 letters of reference. DVM or VMD degree, 1 year postgraduate experience, preferably small or large animal internship; must become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland within 3 months; must have or be able to acquire Maryland driver's license, DEA license, and USDA accreditation; must reside within 15 minutes of the zoo while on call. Physical demands in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, and balance; must be able to work a flexible schedule; must be able to walk large areas of the zoo as needed; must be able to work in an outdoor environment in all seasons and weather; must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force; and, must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including but not limited to a computer, copier, fax, scanner, telephone, animal restraint devices, 2-way radio, golf carts, and vehicles, etc. E-mail Amy Morrill at humanresources@marylandzoo.org or fax 443-320-9022.
