ECFVG program news and upcoming changes |

Starting January 1, 2008 the Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE) will begin the new six-section format approved by the ECFVG during its October 4-5, 2007 meeting. All candidates who are currently registered for a CPE administration after January 1, 2008 were sent a new Manual of Administration. If you are registered for an examination in 2008 and have not received this new Manual of Administration, please contact Ben Curran, ECFVG Testing Coordinator at 800-248-2862, ext 6682 or bcurran@avma.org.

The first administration of the Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE) took place July 6-14, 2007. A total of 199 candidates took the examination during this window, and score reports were sent out during the beginning of September. The second administration of the BCSE will take place on November 26-December 8, 2007. There are 246 candidates registered for this examination window.
The BCSE replaced the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) as the Step 3 assessment tool of the ECFVG program. Candidates enrolled in the ECFVG program who did not pass the NAVLE during or before the April 2007 testing window must take the BCSE to complete Step 3. According to the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME), foreign veterinary graduates enrolled in the ECFVG program and wanting to take the NAVLE after the April 2007 window to fulfill state licensure requirements will be required to first pass the BCSE. More information about the BCSE can be found under Step 3. For information about the NAVLE, please refer to the NBVME Web site (www.nbvme.org).

ECFVG candidates who took and passed the NAVLE during or before the April 2007 testing window may submit a passing score report to the ECFVG office to complete Step 3 of the certification program. The ECFVG requires an official score report from the Veterinary Information Verifying Agency (VIVA) of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). Candidates must contact VIVA directly (www.aavsb.org/VIVA/VIVAHome.aspx; 877-698-8482) to request a NAVLE score transfer. Scores for NAVLE administrations after the April 2007 window do not need to be reported to the ECFVG office, since the NAVLE is no longer be part of the certification program.

The re-registration fee for the ECFVG program has increased to $100.00 for each 2-year period, beginning January 1, 2008. ECFVG candidates who have not yet completed the program and whose current enrollment period expires December 31, 2007 or thereafter are required to pay the new $100 fee. All ECFVG candidates must re-register every two years to remain active in the program. Inactive candidates are not able to continue on through the program. The ECFVG (see ECFVG member list) met at AVMA Headquarters in Schaumburg, IL on October 4-5, 2007. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Don Prater, who represents Government Service on the Commission. The ECFVG welcomed several new members. Dr. Philip Bushby began his three-year term as a non-voting liaison representing Clinical Proficiency Examination site coordinators. Dr. Jan C. Hines began his 2007-2013 term representing the Veterinary Members of State Veterinary Licensing Boards. Dr. Clark Fobian representing District VII is the new Executive Board liaison.

The Commission confirmed the continuation of the BCSE Steering Committee to represent the ECFVG for ongoing maintenance of the BCSE. The Commission also established a three person CPE Steering Committee to oversee ongoing maintenance of the CPE. These groups will meet electronically several times throughout the year to discuss immediate issues concerning the examinations.

The next ECFVG meeting will be April 3-4, 2008 in Schaumburg. Dr. Don Prater will serve as the ECFVG Chair and Dr. Gail Kunkle, representing the Council on Education, will serve as Vice Chair.

ECFVG program statistics |

From January 1 through September 11, 2007, 320 new candidates registered in the ECFVG program. During that same time, 274 candidates completed the program and were awarded ECFVG certificates. Thirty-three percent of those awarded certificates are native-born citizens of the United States and 67% are native-born citizens of other countries. Total number of certificates awarded since 1965 exceeds 4,300.

iB-TOEFL: $150 (USD if taken in the USA)
CAEL Assessment: $140 (CDN; offered in Canada only)
IELTS: $140 (USD if taken in the USA)
Step 3
Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE): $75
Step 4
CPE: $5,000 plus airfare to site, lodging, and meals.
