Changes to the P&P

Thank you to all AVMA CVTEA-accredited programs in veterinary technology who responded to the electronic survey on proposed changes to Standard IV (Physical Facilities and Equipment, Standard V (Resources for Clinical Instruction), and Standard VI (Library and Informational Resources). The proposed changes will be presented to the AVMA Executive Board at its April 2009 for approval. If approved, notification will be sent to all AVMA CVTEA accredited programs and included in the next printing of the Accreditation Policies and Procedures of the AVMA CVTEA (P&P).

The Committee has also made the following changes to the P&P:

  • Added the category of "Administrative Probation". Administrative Probation is intended as a punitive measure for those programs failing to comply with administrative requirements for maintenance of accreditation. A financial penalty to programs may also be included in the stipulations of being placed on administrative probation.
  • Amendments were made to Appendix B: Guidelines for the Use of Animals in Veterinary Technology Teaching Programs for clarification.
  • Added verbiage to clarify the intent of "group activities" designated within Appendix I: Veterinary Technology Student Essential and Recommended Skills List.

Changes to Appendix I also include:

  • Under Therapeutics, page, 5, under "place intravenous catheters", changed cephalic and saphenous to required and made jugular as recommended to read "place intravenous catheters (cephalic*, saphenous*, jugular)"
  • Under Laboratory Animal Procedures, page 13, under Perform methods of injection, changed intramuscular from required to recommended

*Indicates required task

Changes were made to Section VI under substantive change for clarification. In addition, AVMA CVTEA accredited programs will need to submit a "Substantive Change" form when reporting changes. The form is available online at www.avma.org or by emailing jhorvath@avma.org.

The above changes will be included in the next printing of the P&P in May 2009.

The P&P is also available online by clicking here.

To help recognize your achievement of accreditation by the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA), we are pleased to announce the availability of an AVMA CVTEA accredited logo.

All veterinary technology programs accredited by the AVMA CVTEA are eligible to use the logo. To do so, you will need to fill out a Logo Permission Form and submit to Ms. Julie Horvath. The form is available online at www.avma.org or by emailing jhorvath@avma.org.

The CVTEA Accreditation Logo cannot be used to promote a commercial endeavor other than the accredited veterinary technician or technology program. It also cannot be used by programs that have applied for, but not yet received CVTEA accreditation.

Once permission has been granted, you will be required to submit a sample of how the logo will be used for AVMA documentation.

Annual Joint Meeting of Stakeholders

The AVMA CVTEA hosted an annual meeting with representatives of the American Association of State Boards (AAVSB), the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE), the Canadian Association of Animal Health Technologists and Technicians (CAAHTT), and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). The purpose of the meeting is to discuss topics of mutual interest and to help bridge positive relationships among all stakeholders. Topics discussed at the meeting include changes to the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), disclosure of VTNE scores by AVMA CVTEA accredited programs, and nomenclature within the profession.

AVMA Staff Changes

Dr. Karen Martens Brandt and Dr. Kenneth A. Clever have joined the AVMA Education and Research Division and will support the CVTEA. Both have extensive backgrounds in veterinary technician education and are former program directors. Dr. Brandt also has many years of practice experience in dairy and companion animal practice. She is from Gaylord, MN. Dr. Clever has directed several veterinary technician programs and was most recently Dean of Career and Technical Programs at Durham Technical College in Durham, NC. We are extremely pleased to have both of these highly qualified professionals join the AVMA staff to serve the CVTEA.

Fond Farewell

We are saddened to report that Dr. Gary Leff will be leaving the AVMA at the end of 2008. Dr. Leff has been instrumental in the quality and integrity of the AVMA CVTEA accreditation process for the past seven years as AVMA staff and the previous six years as a CVTEA member. We wish to thank him for his dedication and contribution to the profession and the AVMA.
