Changes to the standards of accreditation must be approved by the AVMA Executive Board. The AVMA Executive Board approved the following changes under Standard 3 Organization and Communications. Deletions are indicated by use of strikeout, additions are indicated by use of underline.
3c. Program relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and the public must be conducted with integrity. Policies and available educational services for veterinary technology students must be clearly defined >and consistent with those provided to all students enrolled in the parent institution.
3d. The CVTEA must be apprised of major changes in administration, organization, association with the parent institution, and major changes in the curriculum, faculty, or stated objectives. All such major changes must be reported to CVTEA within sixty (60) thirty days of implementation with an explanation of and must document how the program will continue to comply with accreditation Standards.
3e. The program must have an advisory committee that meets at least annually to provide counsel regarding equipment, curriculum, demographic trends to the veterinary technology program regarding equipment needs, curriculum, local needs for veterinary technicians, and other matters pertaining to the veterinary technology profession program. In addition, committee members should be program liaisons with other veterinarians and the public about the activities and purposes of the program. Membership must include veterinarians and veterinary technicians with diverse professional interests, and should include veterinary technician students, industry representatives, and public members.
3f. Programs with agreements between Cooperative programs among two or more institutions are recognized encouraged. The institution accredited by CVTEA is declared the parent (home) institution and grants the degree or certificate. When a cooperative program meets the criteria for CVTEA accreditation, the institution granting the degree or certificate will be awarded accreditation status.
3g. Communication and interactions with veterinary technician educator associations, veterinary medical associations, and veterinary technician associations should be maintained. Cooperative efforts and interactions should be maintained between the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE), veterinary medical associations, and veterinary technician associations.
The following changes were made to The Essential and Recommended Skills List (Appendix I). Text italicized denotes hands-on (psychomotor) skills.
- Under item 3, NURSING, Patient Care; Tasks, Husbandry
Changed "Perform therapeutic bathing, basic grooming, and dipping of small animals*" to "Demonstrate understanding of therapeutic bathing, basic grooming, and dipping of small animals*"
Added "Perform microchip scanning and implantation" as a hands-on (psychomotor) skill. The skill is recommended, not required.
- Under item 6. LABORATORY PROCEDURES, Specimen analysis, Identify blood parasites:
The order of "Dirofilaria sp/Dipetalonema sp. - direct, Knotts, filter, antigen kit*" was changed to "Dirofilaria sp/Dipetalonema sp. - antigen kit*, direct*, filter, Knotts" to more clearly define which tests are required and which are recommended: antigen kit and direct are required; filter and Knotts are recommended but not required.
*Indicates required task
Other Changes
In Appendix H, Microchip Scanner was added as a required piece of equipment.
In Section VI, Subsequent Reporting, the Committee added a description of "substantive change" to provide guidance on which changes are necessary to report to the CVTEA in a timely manner.
As reported previously, the Committee identified certain skills that may be completed as group activities. A summary of these tasks is available by contacting the jhorvath@avma.org.
