Following review of survey feedback, no changes were made to Standards I, II, and III by the Committee. Thank you to everyone who participated in the voluntary survey.
The following Standards and sections of the P&P are scheduled for review at the CVTEA spring 2012 meeting:
- Standard IV (Physical Facilities and Equipment)
- Standard V (Resources for Clinical Instruction)
- Standard VI (Library and Informational Resources)
- Appendix I – The following sections only:
- Section 1(Office and Hospital Procedures, Client Relations, and Communication)
- Section 4 (Anesthesia)
- Section 7 (Imaging)
- Appendix H – Species section only
A voluntary survey to provide comments to the above sections will be sent out in the summer 2012. Comments and feedback regarding any Standard, policy or procedure are welcomed at any time by emailing AVMA staff at jhorvath@avma.org
The Committee approved a change to Appendix A – Statement on Safety, item e – Emergency Preparedness as follows:
Emergency Preparedness – A plan must should be in place to address safety issues in the event of any natural or other disaster
The format of the Report of Evaluation (ROE) has been modified from a less subjective narrative format to a more descriptive check list style. The new ROE format will launch beginning with site visits in 2012.
The next update to the CVTEA Accreditation Policies and Procedures Manual will be released in late January 2012. A detailed description of the changes made will be sent to each AVMA CVTEA accredited program and posted on the AVMA CVTEA Accreditation website at www.avma.org. Changes to the P&P are primarily grammatical with no major changes in the Standards of Accreditation or policies and procedures.
Topics that the CVTEA are currently working on include the following:
- Developing definitions of the different types of program modalities such as "traditional on-campus", "distance education" and "hybrid". With the growing demand for distance education, the Committee is considering implementing a policy that current programs that want to offer a distance education program in addition to a traditional campus program must accredit the program as a new program.
- Considering the requirement of an abrupt absence contingency policy so that programs are prepared for a leadership transition in the event of an unforeseen event.
- Considering alternatives to the site visit agenda timeframe.
- Researching the costs and benefits of an online accreditation management system. This system would be designed to reduce paper and enhance record-keeping of reports, survey information, and correspondence between programs and the CVTEA.

The CVTEA was pleased to have guests from the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE), the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), the Canadian Association of Animal Health Technologists and Technicians (CAAHTT), and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). The purpose of the meeting is to bring together stakeholders interested in improving the veterinary technology profession and to provide an opportunity to discuss areas of mutual concern and develop ideas for mutual benefit.

Q: What documents, and for how long, do I need to keep student records for accreditation purposes?
A: Programs must keep student records of completion of required skills for the time period of one full accreditation cycle or follow state or federal requirements if longer. Records may be kept in an electronic format. Other documentation programs should keep are grades and exams that cover didactic portions of the curriculum for a time period of one full accreditation cycle or as required by institutional policy or federal or state requirements.
Q: What changes constitute the filing of a Substantive Change Form (SCF)?
A: Any change that impacts the delivery or the maintenance of the program must be reported within 60 days of implementation. Examples include changes in core program faculty, major changes to facilities or curriculum, and any change in credit or externship hours. A full list of situations that merit the filing of an SCF are included on the SCF form. Some situations do not require the filing of an SCF, these include, but not limited to:
- Changes in general education faculty
- Minor curriculum changes
Programs are encouraged to submit questions to the CVTEA regarding any accreditation issue at any time during the year by emailing AVMA staff at jhorvath@avma.org.

* CVTEA recommended and the AVMA Executive Board approved a recommendation to extend the terms of a limited number of CVTEA members to maintain consistency in the level of experience on the CVTEA. This was recommended due to the rapid expansion of veterinary technology programs, combined with an upcoming high rate of turnover on the CVTEA in the next two years as a result of the expansion of the committee six years ago.
