Avoid mistakes when calculating student attrition

The accreditation system can sometimes be complex and confusing, even to those who are intimately involved with it. One area in which we get a lot of questions is outcomes assessment, especially as it relates to attrition.

Colleges are required to provide an analysis of outcomes involving student achievement. For example, student attrition must be analyzed to separate students leaving the program (never returning) from those who recycle or transfer to other DVM programs.

New vetting process examines candidates

Elections for new COE members took place at the AVMA's July 2009 Annual Session under the auspices of a new candidate nomination and review process, several years in the making.

Council members elected

The AVMA House of Delegates, at the July 2009 annual meeting, elected Dr. Frederik Derksen, representing basic science; and Dr. D. Glen Esplin, representing non-private practice, non-academic veterinary medicine to the COE.

In addition to these new members a new public member was elected to the Council at the COE's spring 2009 meeting. The new public member is Dr. Nicole Roberts.

Executive officers assume their duties

The new executive officers elected at the COE's Spring 2009 meeting have officially assumed their duties this July 2009 and will serve until July 2010. The new officers are:

  • Chair: Dr. Laurie Jaeger
  • Vice-Chair: Dr. Kent Hoblet
  • Chair of the Committee on Evaluation:
    Dr. Robert Cherenson
  • Chair of the Committee on Academic Affairs:
    Dr. James Brace

The Council on Education has four comprehensive site visits planned:

  • Murdoch University, September 27-October 2
  • University of Calgary, October 25-29
  • Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM), November 8-12
