AVMF addresses estate planning issues for veterinarians

AVMF logoAs if day-to-day financial concerns weren't enough to think about, it's easy to overlook planning for future money matters. Things like establishing trusts or a medical power of attorney may not seem important now, but they can play a pivotal role during life-or-death situations.

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation aims to provide some help on these matters at its "Estate Planning Basics for Veterinary Professionals" seminar. Kimberly A. Colgate, JD, a former law professor, is speaking every day of the convention from 12:00 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in room 612 of the convention center. Colgate has written two books on estate planning, including "The Pet Plan and Pet Trust Guide."

The sessions, "Make Sure Your Estate Goes to Those You Love," are a free service provided to convention attendees and their guests by the Foundation. During the educational seminars, issues about long-term estate planning will be addressed, such as:

  • Caring for family members with special needs.
  • What to do in the event of becoming incapacitated.
  • Planning so that no unnecessary probate or estate and gift taxes are incurred.
  • Passing on the family business intact, without substantial taxes for heirs.
  • Resolving divorce, remarriage, and blended-family considerations.
  • Continuing to support favorite charities after death.

The Foundation's director, Michael Cathey, said the seminar is an opportunity for AVMA members and friends to achieve great peace of mind in what can often be a difficult and confusing process.

After the sessions, Colgate will be available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. every day at the AVMF booth for an "Ask the Expert" presentation about estate planning and more.
