Initially established in 1957 from a proposal by the Gaines Dog Research Center, the award was subsequently offered by Heinz Pet Products, and known as the Innovative Veterinary Diets Fido Award, and is now sponsored by Royal Canin Veterinary Diet. The basis of the award is to foster progress in small animal medicine and surgery. Royal Canin Veterinary Diet annually offers the award to a veterinarian whose work (within the preceding five years) in either clinical research or the basic sciences is judged to have contributed significantly to the advancement of the field. The award consists of a "Fido" statuette and $1,000.

Nominations due February 1, 2010
In 1934, funds raised for the entertainment of delegates to the XIIth International Veterinary Congress held in New York that year resulted in an unexpended balance. The U.S. Committee on Finance of that Congress met in 1936 to consider utilization of the unexpended money and voted that the sum of $5,000 should be turned over to the AVMA for investment in U.S. Treasury bonds, the interest to be used each year for an award to be known as the XIIth International Veterinary Congress Prize that recognizes outstanding service by a member of the Association who has contributed to international understanding of veterinary medicine. The award consists of a Tiffany crystal sculpture and $500.
