Animal Welfare...
From the Experts

Protecting an animal's welfare means providing for its physical and mental needs. The American Veterinary Medical Association has defined its commitment to animal well being through the adoption of Animal Welfare Principles that serve as guidance when the Association develops policies and takes action to ensure animals are treated humanely.

Current Issue Spotlight: Horse Welfare

Transportation
The AVMA has consistently supported efforts to protect the welfare of horses during transport, and is now actively pursuing passage of The Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2009. Take Action Now to let your Members of Congress know that the humane transport of horses is important to you. Learn more about the humane transport of horses.

Unwanted Horses
If Congress decides that horses and other equids are prohibited from being processed for human consumption, it is estimated that each year an alternate disposition will need to be found for 100,000 unwanted U.S. horses. A congressional ban on horse processing will only lead to the inhumane treatment of equines if the ramifications of such actions are not addressed.. Take Action Now and express your concerns with this legislation to your Members of Congress. Learn more about this important issue.
