The 'Jellicle Cats' portrayed in the junkyard during Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical "CATS" are more commonly known as feral or free-roaming cats. Balancing the welfare of these cats with the concerns of the community in which they live, including their impact on wildlife, presents many challenges. Factors to be considered include responsible pet ownership, predation, sterilization, public health, euthanasia, and biodiversity.
This year the AVMA welcomes six noteworthy speakers from both sides of the fence who will provide valuable information for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, wildlife biologists, legislators, representatives of humane organizations and shelters, and members of the public interested in the management of abandoned and feral cats.
Related issues are numerous and complex, and affect the lives of millions of cats in the United States. Speakers at the 2003 Animal Welfare Forum will present their perspectives on:
- How unowned, free-roaming, feral and/or abandoned cat populations are defined
- What role the veterinary profession should play in addressing this issue
- Effective ways to achieve reduction of unowned, free-roaming cats
- Whether TNR programs are in the best interest of native wildlife, public health, and the cats themselves
- Whether feral cat colonies can be managed to extinction by TNR programs
- How programs designed to benefit one species can have a negative impact on other species
Two panel discussions will facilitate interaction between forum attendees and speakers.
