Federal regulatory practice issues: Drugs

AVMA Response to Food and Drug Administration Environmental Scan
Formal title:
2010 Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA CVM) Environmental Scan

Action:

Request for stakeholder input

Brief Description:

The comments submitted by the AVMA were in response to a request to stakeholders by the FDA CVM requesting feedback on a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis CVM is currently conducting.

AVMA Response:

As requested the AVMA focused on three main areas:

  1. Forces outside the CVM boundaries that are helping to shape the organization;
  2. Perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats influencing CVM;
  3. Organizational sustainability to support external trends, opportunities and challenges

Forces outside the CVM boundaries that are helping to shape the organization include demands of population growth, activist groups, and public risk aversion related to food safety. A SWOT analysis was also conducted to highlight the perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats influencing CVM. In regards to organizational sustainability to support external trends, opportunities and challenges, AVMA suggests that the FDA must insist that all legislative mandates receive full funding for FDA to implement.
