| The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced its notice to close the comment period on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). |
| Brief Description: |
| The USDA APHIS's comment period for the submission of stakeholder concerns related to the implementation of the NAIS was closing on August 3, 2009. The comment period opened on May 1, 2009 with the publication of its first notice announcing fourteen public meetings on the subject. The last meeting was held on June 30, 2009; however, USDA APHIS continued to provide the public with the option of submitting written comments. |
| AVMA Response: |
| The AVMA asserts that the NAIS is vital for protecting the U.S. from catastrophic outbreaks of agricultural animal diseases and greatly enhances the future of U.S. international trade and commerce in animals and animal products. The AVMA believes that a uniform system applied to all identification technologies, livestock species, and premises is fundamental to an effective and efficient NAIS. The AVMA also believes that animals need to be identified using a uniform numbering system that apply to all technologies, species, and production premises. If APHIS encourages, assists, and recognizes and accepts individual states programs that compliment, are compatible with, and meet NAIS standards using guidance already developed, this action would expedite NAIS implementation and would be an important step towards protecting the U.S. livestock industries from catastrophic animal disease outbreaks. This action would also provide a strong incentive for individual states to consider the promulgation of appropriate state regulations that would support an integrated NAIS. |
