| Brief Description and AVMA Response |
The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service released a notice stating that it would be proposing revisions to be made to the proposed changes to the National Veterinary Accreditation Program which appeared in the Federal Register on June 1, 2006.
The supplemental proposal addresses the differentiation of Category I and II of accreditation. According to the supplemental proposal Category I would be defined as veterinarians who are authorized to perform accredited activities only on animals other than food and fiber animals, horses, farm-raised fish, poultry, all other livestock, birds, and zoo animals that could transmit exotic animal diseases to livestock. These animals would be referred to as nonregulated animals. All references to companion animals in the proposed rule would be replaced with nonregulated animals. USDA APHIS believes that certain activities such as creating flock health plans require the additional training and skills of Category II accreditation.
The supplemental proposal also further regulates the initial training aspect of accreditation. It states that veterinarians who complete the initial training may choose the type of accreditation they would like to receive, without additional training requirements. It is also proposed that newly accredited veterinarians renew their credentials within three years of completing the initial training. Initial training would typically be administered in veterinary school.
The number of hours of continuing education of renewal was reduced in this proposal: Category I from four to three hours and Category II from nine to six hours. The supplemental proposal also addresses the means by which accreditation categories can be changed.

| Response |
The AVMA response to the proposed rule supplement included:
- Reemphasizing the need for temporary licensed and accredited veterinarians from other states to assist manpower shortages in cases of declared emergency or disaster.
- Reemphasizing the need for accredited veterinarians to assist with "farm-raised aquatic animals" and "ornamental or aquarium aquatic animals."
- Expressing concern and suggesting a solution for replacing the definition of "companion animals" with "nonregulated animals".
