Issue brief

H.R. 814 Tracing and Recalling Agricultural Contamination Everywhere (TRACE) Act of 2009

PDF file Printer-friendly version

Summary
HR 814 seeks to amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Poultry Products inspection Act, and the Egg products Act to enhance traceability for all stages of manufacturing, processing, packaging, and distribution of food.

AVMA Position: Nonsupport

Justification:

  • The AVMA believes that implementation of a traceability system for all meat, poultry and egg products would be ideal, but is impractical and prohibitively expensive. The financial and human resources required by industry and government agencies to implement this type law would be enormous with limited improvement in the safety of these commodities. Furthermore, HR 814 does not provide direction or resources for such restructuring to take place.
