Ban on Cephalosporin Extra-label Drug Use Withdrawn

On July 3, the FDA issued an Order of Prohibition on extralabel cephalosporin use in food producing animals. Originally providing for a 60-day comment period and an October 1 effective date, the FDA extended its comment period an additional 60 days (at the request of AVMA and other stakeholders) until November 3, thereby delaying implementation of the ban until November 30. EPA Seeks to Survey Facilities on Pharmaceutical Disposal

On August 12, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its plan to collect pharmaceutical disposal survey information from the healthcare industry, including veterinary facilities.
