THOMAS F. MEYER, DVM

Recently elected AVMA Executive Board Representative, District XI

Dr. Thomas F. Meyer is co-owner with his wife, Dr. Jean Meyer, of an AAHA-certified mixed-animal practice in Vancouver, WA. He established Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in 1979, a year after his graduation from Washington State University-College of Veterinary Medicine, and today the practice employs three associate veterinarians. Dr. Meyer's experience as a mixed-animal practitioner, working with his wife and colleagues has given him a strong understanding of veterinary medicine from many perspectives— including the issues encountered by both male and female practitioners in balancing family values and professional activities, the changing landscape facing large and small animal medicine, the business challenges of maintaining a progressive veterinary practice and the financial concerns of veterinarians who are recent graduates.

Dr. Meyer has served organized veterinary medicine in many capacities, including leadership positions at the local, state and national levels. Dr. Meyer was chair of the AVMA House Advisory Committee in 2002-2003 and represented private practice-predominately equine on this committee from 1999 to 2007. He has served in the AVMA House of Delegates as a delegate or alternative delegate since 1995, and was president of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) in 1988 as well as being honored as its Veterinarian of the Year in 2004. Dr. Meyer also was chair of the Washington-Oregon-Idaho (WOI) Steering Committee from 1990-1993 and was the equine representative on the AVMA Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee from 1998-2004. Dr. Meyer's interest in leadership development led him to be an advocate for the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE), an experiential leadership program for students and faculty from across North America that teaches life skills in better communication and collaboration with one another.

In addition to the AVMA and the WSVMA, Dr. Meyer has been an active member of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the Society for Theriogenology.

In pursuit to his doctor of veterinary medicine degree, Dr. Meyer received a master's in zoology from Washington State University in 1973, and a bachelor's in biology from Central Washington State College in 1972.
