Section 8—The Council on Communications
a) The Council on Communications shall consist of ten active or honor roll members elected by the House of Delegates for terms of six years. Members shall represent the following areas of veterinary medical activity:
i) Private practice, predominantly small animal (two members)
ii) Private practice, predominantly food animal (one member)
iii) Private practice, predominantly equine (one member)
iv) Non-private practice (one member)
v) Public health or regulatory veterinary medicine (one member)
vi) At large (four members)

b) The Council shall:
i) Envision and oversee internal and external communication programs that are strategic, focused, and timely.
ii) Foster a positive image of AVMA, AVMA members, and veterinary medicine to AVMA's publics.
iii) Maintain and enhance relationships between AVMA and its publics.
iv) Utilize marketing analysis to aid in the creation and refinement of communication programs.
v) Support and assist the Executive Board in developing resources to accomplish communication programs.

The Executive Board authorized a Student AVMA representative to attend future meetings of the Council on Public Relations, with travel allowance of $1,500/yr. provided by AVMA, and allocated from funds programmed in the Public Information Divisional budget. A representative of the American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives was authorized to sit in on the Council on Public Relations meetings in an ex-officio position with transportation, hotel, and meal expenses paid by the AVMA. (HOD-July, 1991 amended by HOD Resolution 4-1998).
