Hurricane Recovery
Responding to Hurricane Katrina

On September 1st, millions of Americans living in the path of Hurricane Katrina woke up to face a scenario they never thought they'd see. Ninety thousand square miles of destruction, millions of displaced people and, in New Orleans, rising waters that threatened humans, their pets, farm animals and wildlife. It is, and continues to be, the worst natural disaster to ever hit our nation.

In response to the disastrous situation, four Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMAT), sponsored by the AVMA, have been deployed to strategic staging locations in the hurricane-stricken area and are conducting overall assessments of veterinary facilities, animal issues and public health issues.

Use the resources provided here to gain more information about the areas affected, find resources, including insurance information for veterinarians affected by the hurricane, and ways to help those afflicted by the tragedy, both human and animal, and read the latest news on the VMAT teams.

Now, more than ever, veterinarians must come together to help those affected by this desperate situation. It will take years, not days. But we know something about dedication and longevity. And we will, once more, be a shining example to the country and the world.
