Veterinary technicians are critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices, and play vital roles in preserving animal health and welfare. National Veterinary Technician Week provides an opportunity to recognize veterinary technicians’ contributions. First celebrated in 1993, it takes place in the third week of October each year.

We value veterinary technicians every day of the year and thank them for all they do. During National Veterinary Technician Week, we honor their commitment to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for all animals. Please join us in celebrating these important team members.

Mentoring scholarships awarded

The AVMA is committed to supporting veterinary technicians, who play crucial roles in caring for patients and making veterinary practices run smoothly and efficiently. To celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week in 2023, we joined with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) to award scholarships for 35 veterinary technicians to receive mentoring through MentorVet Tech. The scholarships were supported by educational partners Covetrus and Pets Best. The MentorVet Tech program provides a full range of resources, including coaching and digital learning on topics from wellbeing to financial planning.

Empowering veterinary technicians

Empowering veterinary technicians to use all of their training and skills drives practice efficiency and wellbeing—for everyone in the hospital. There’s a clear link between practice revenue and the work of veterinary technicians, and also between veterinary technicians’ job satisfaction and their use of the skills and knowledge acquired in their education. Plus, when we fully utilize all of our veterinary technicians’ skills, we free up veterinarians’ time to focus solely on work that requires veterinary medical education—and that means more satisfied veterinarians as well.

Learn more about empowering your veterinary technicians to improve practice success. This information can help you assess and optimize staffing to enhance your practice. What better way to honor your veterinary technicians?

For a deeper dive, you also can take advantage of AVMA Axon’s 1-credit CE webinar: “How well do you utilize veterinary technicians?”—free to all AVMA members.
